Effects of Isolation in Of Mice and Men

2 characters effected:
Curly’s wife and Crooks. Crook effected by racism as being black man on the ranch. Curly’s wife effected by sexism. She’s 1 of the few women at the ranch

The way the novel explains social circumstance of 30’s California
Shows people that wokr in the ranch are the lowest of the low. The two people I,ve chosen are even lower as one is black and one is female.

Explain how interaction of characters shows Steinbecks ideas about Isolation
He shows it by explaining how and what people have to do just to get a small amount of money in that era. Lennie and George are different they have a dream that they are close to fulfilling. It also shows that most people in that era had noone to speak to all call friends. they kept themselves to themselves.

Structure of the novel and isolation
the structure of the novel makes us think about isolation because it shows us in great detail about how they live. How black people are segregated.

How Language used shows us the effects of isolation on mice and men
That one I can’t answer.

    This is great progress, Cameron

Your points are clear and valid. I’m particularly impressed with your thinking about the interaction of the characters and what makes George and Lennie different.

    I recommend the following:

    1) Spend a lot more time on the two characters you’ve chosen (maybe two paragraphs per character) and explore them from a range of points of view – like:

    -Physical description when they’re introduced
-What other people say about them
-What they say about loneliness (Crooks and Curley’s wife both make brilliant quotes about this – which I can help you locate if you indicate which ones you want)
    – their dreams and what happens to them in the end

(check the notes from the board here if you need more thoughts on how to do this – you’ve already done this with Lennie, so you’re confident in the process)

    2) Remember to take as many quotes as you can in with you as this essay depends on your ability to support your ideas with evidence from the text. If you don’t have enough tomorrow, you can work on this after school for the next day and add them in.

    3) You also have to look at language and structure which means considering how things change or develop in the novel, or looking at the words used to describe key characteristics of your selected characters and noting anything you think is particularly effective in showing their isolation.

    – Thanks very much C & C for taking the time to think this through. It will make a big difference tomorrow when it comes to beginning drafting an answer.

I also really like the phrase “Curleys Wife feels this keenly especially as she’s the only woman on the ranch.” from your class essay. It expresses the important ideas of the novel very succinctly. The word ‘keenly’ is PERFECT.

React!
